Enchantment - The Nutcracker - November / December 2021
"The Nutcracker and the Mouse King" is a story written in 1816 by Prussian author E. T. A. Hoffmann, in which young Marie favorite Christmas toy, the Nutcracker, comes alive and, after defeating the evil Mouse King in battle, whisks her away to a magical kingdom populated by dolls. Over the years this story has been adapted in many forms from a ballet to movies. The most famous adaption is "Princess Pirlipatine and the Nutcracker" book by Alexander Dumas (1844) which formed the basis for the next centuries nutcracker ballet adaptions.
In Alexandre Dumas' rendition of E. T. A. Hoffman's, The Nutcracker and the the Mouse King, the Sugar Plum Fairy rules over the Kingdom of Sweets. When Marie Silberhaus helps the Nutcracker kill the Mouse King, the Nutcracker turns into a Prince and, in gratitude, takes Marie to the kingdom where the Sugar Plum Fairy presides over the festivities held in Marie's honour.
